Regarded as “Europe’s 12 Years a Slave…”, Fox Searchlight coming off of an Academy-Award win with Best Supporting Actress Lupita Nyong’o seems to have developed a knack for Period Films and Biopics; Belle is not the typical black man’s plight movie. Belle is a story filled with many stories; from human rights to women’s rights to social class.

Dido Elizabeth Belle was not only able to beat the odds; she was also able to help influence groundbreaking results in the abolitionist movement due to her family ties with Lord Mansfield, Lord Chief Justice. Belle was biracial and born into an aristocratic family in the 1700’s. She was privileged on some level, but not able to enjoy it to it’s fullest because of her skin color. Gugu Mbatha-Raw played a great Belle; Could she be the next Lupita?
