Calvary, the Dark Comedy from Director John Michael McDonagh is Set to Open August 1st at Select Theaters in New York City and Los Angeles.

Calvary is a film which exploits the phrase “No good deed goes unpunished.”  Good natured guy turned priest, Father James Lavelle is suddenly faced with battling the demons surrounding him.  Throughout the film each character is experiencing their own personal “calvary” or extreme suffering.  The cast includes Brendan Gleeson (Safe House), Chris O’Dowd (Girls tv series/Thor), Kelly Reilly (Flight) and Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones).

Father James Lavelle, a priest in a town of sinners, is threatened by a man during a confessional.  The man tells Lavelle that he has one week to get his affairs in order because he is going to kill him.  The twist to this whole plot is that the man plans on killing Lavelle not because of a sin he committed but because a he is a good priest.  The unidentified man goes on to explain to Lavelle that as a child he was raped and molested by a catholic priest whom was not punished and recently died.  Father James Lavelle tries to give advice to the man and offers to absolve him from any sin, but the man declines and says that he will feel much better to just kill a good priest.

From Aidan Gillen, who plays the sly Lord Petyr Baelish in Game of Thrones, to his similar character; Dr. Frank Harte a kind, sadistic and sarcastic physician to Chris O’Dowd who plays Jack Brennan a calmly-scorned husband who is married to a blow snorting town whore; Director John Michael McDonagh does a phenomenal job in making such a dark subject light hearted and laughable.  In the end, the nice guy finishes last and all of the sinners continue to live sinful lives.
